allmusic.com...

The longtime frontman for metal superstars White Zombie, Rob Zombie was born Robert Cummings on January 12, 1966, in Haverhill, Massachusetts, forming the group soon after moving to New York City circa 1985. He subsequently worked as a bike messenger, porn magazine art director, and production assistant for the classic children\'s TV series Pee-Wee\'s Playhouse, concurrently leading White Zombie through a series of cult-favorite indie releases; the success of their 1992 major-label debut, La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1, not only launched Zombie to new prominence within the music industry, but also allowed him to try his hand at animation (most notably a hallucinatory sequence of the feature Beavis & Butt-Head Do America) and directing (he was slated to helm the third chapter of The Crow franchise, working from his own screenplay, but Miramax Films eventually pulled out of the deal).

Bob Mould
Beauty & Ruin (2014)

allmusic.com...

There is a tension within the title of Beauty & Ruin, Bob Mould\'s tenth solo album, a tension that can also be heard in the music. Written and recorded in the wake of the death of Mould\'s somewhat estranged father, Beauty & Ruin is a heavier album than its predecessor Silver Age in both emotional and musical terms. Where that 2012 record was a reaffirmation of his strengths, a happy reclamation of all the blaring, candied punk-pop rush of Sugar, this digs deeper, finding room for the churning introspection of Beaster and a bit of the furious mania of prime Hüsker Dü. This versatility is confirmation that his 2010s band, anchored by bassist Jason Narducy (formerly of Verbow and now of Split Single) and Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster, might be his most accomplished supporting group ever, able to follow him through the storms and settle into the aftermath. Although this opens with the slow, grinding "Low Season" and eventually winds its way to the bright, open "Forgiveness," most of this record is devoted to turmoil, as Mould comes to terms with his impending mortality -- hanging over him through both the passing of his dad and his own middle-age -- by drawing sustenance from his signature combination of crystalline pop and molten noise. As loud as this gets, what matters is the subtleties of tone: Silver Age felt like a positive reclamation but Beauty & Ruin is somber, feeling sober even at its most joyous moments; "I Don\'t Know You Anymore," "Tomorrow Morning," and "Hey Mr. Grey" are fueled by ebullient hooks but what they deliver is clutched and coiled, hinting at the intensity of New Day Rising even when there\'s no denying Mould isn\'t attempting to reclaim his youth at all. This self-aware mortality is the trump card of Beauty & Ruin, as Mould neither denies his youth nor his age; as he explores his pain, he finds emotional and musical narrative to tie his past to his present and the results are powerful.

allmusic.com...

Before becoming one of country music\'s most popular females, songwriter Miranda Lambert grew up in Lindale, Texas, a small town 80 miles east of Dallas. The daughter of a country guitarist (Rick Lambert) and a detective agency owner, she was raised in a house dedicated to country music. Lambert began entering country talent contests when she was 16, including an appearance with the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas. She learned to play guitar and began writing her own songs while continuing to enter various competitions, one of which earned her an appearance in a potato chip advertisement and the 2001 teen comedy Slap Her She\'s French. At 17 years old, she formed the Texas Pride Band and began gigging professionally, and later in 2001 -- with financial help from her father -- she showcased her songwriting skills by releasing an independent CD, Miranda Lambert. Two of the album\'s tracks, "Texas Pride" and "Somebody Else," even entered the Texas music charts.

David Gilmour Star Mark Greatest Hits (2006) allmusic.com... David Gilmour gained international fame for his incisive, atmospheric guitar work and vocals with Pink Floyd, and eventually became the leader of the group during their late period as well as pursuing a successful solo career and working with some of the most respected names in British rock. Gilmour was born in Cambridge, England on March 6, 1946; his parents were both involved in education -- his father was a lecturer in Zoology at Cambridge University and his mother was a teacher -- and as a schoolboy, Gilmour struck up a friendship with a boy who attended the same grade school, Roger Barrett, who later gained the nickname Syd. Gilmour became re-acquainted with Barrett while they were studying at the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology; both were interested in music and began learning to play guitar in their spare time, as did Barrett\'s friend Roger Waters. In 1963, Gilmour joined a rock group, Jokers Wild, which specialized in R&B covers; in 1965, he and Barrett took the summer off and spent several months busking and traveling through France, though the adventure didn\'t pay off financially. After returning to England, Gilmour played with a group called Flowers for a while, as well as a revamped version of Jokers Wild called Bullitt; meanwhile, Barrett and Waters teamed up with Rick Wright and Nick Mason to form a group called the Tea Set, which was later renamed Pink Floyd. In 1967, Pink Floyd was the toast of London\'s burgeoning psychedelic scene on the strength of the singles "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play," and the album Piper at the Gates Of Dawn. However, Barrett had become increasingly unstable, sometimes becoming catatonic on-stage or playing different songs than his bandmates, and as his ability to perform was compromised, Gilmour was invited to join the group to help with guitar and vocals when Barrett was having trouble. However, after a few shows it became evident that Gilmour\'s presence wasn\'t enough to rescue Barrett, and the group\'s leader was let go as Gilmour became the band\'s new lead guitarist by default, and he would produce and play on Barrett\'s two solo albums before Barrett retired from music. Lords Of Acid
Heaven Is An Orgasm (1998)

image

allmusic.com...

Lords of Acid\'s exaggeratedly sexual acid house dance music gained a cult following with their 1991 album, Lust. Previously, the band had released three singles that laid the groundwork for the dense, throbbing Lust and its club hits, "Rough Sex" and "I Must Increase My Bust." Between their debut and their second album, 1994\'s Voodoo-U, Lords of Acid added industrial elements to their sound and became a more straightforward, band-oriented group. At the time of their second album, Lords of Acid were led by Lady Galore (born Ruth McArdle; vocals) and featured bassist Lord T. Byron (born Frank Vloeberghs), keyboard player Shai de la Luna, and drummer McGuinness (born Kurt Liekens). Subsequent efforts include 1997\'s Our Little Secret and 1999\'s Expand Your Head. Farstucker followed in early 2001, as well as a series of "stript" (their term) re-releases that cut the vocals from the original albums. With a few unreleased cuts, the 2005 compilation Greatest T*ts would have to hold fans over until 2011 when the Little Mighty Rabbit EP arrived. The EP\'s title track would be featured on the album Deep Chills, which followed in 2012.

Originally a fan club-only release with a limited edition of 500 copies, the Lords of Acid\'s Heaven Is an Orgasm features rare and previously unreleased songs, including "Superstar," "Acid Queen," "Robot Love," "Orchestral Sinsations," and "The Mirror." Another dose of libidinous, humorous techno from a group that specializes in it.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
What Hits!? (1992)

allmusic.com...

Few rock groups of the \'80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack by the dawn of the 21st century. The roots of the band lay in a friendship forged by three school chums, Anthony Kiedis, Michael Balzary, and Hillel Slovak, while they attended Fairfax High School in California back in the late \'70s/early \'80s. While Balzary and Slovak showed great musical promise (on trumpet and guitar, respectively), Kiedis focused on poetry and acting during his high-school career. During this time, Slovak taught Balzary how to play bass, while the duo encouraged Kiedis to start putting his poetry to music, which he soon did. Influenced heavily by the burgeoning L.A. punk scene (the Germs, Black Flag, Fear, Minutemen, X, etc.) as well as funk (Parliament-Funkadelic, Sly & the Family Stone, etc.), the trio began to rehearse with another friend, drummer Jack Irons, leading to the formation of Tony Flow & the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, a quartet that played strip bars along the Sunset Strip during the early \'80s. It was during this time that the four honed their sound and live act (as they stumbled across a stage gimmick that would soon become their trademark -- performing on-stage completely naked, except for a tube sock covering a certain part of their anatomy). By 1983, Balzary had begun to go by the name "Flea," and the group changed its name to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Jake Owen Discography (2006-2013) allmusic.com... When plans for a professional golfing career were derailed by an injury, country songwriter Jake Owen picked up a guitar and never looked back. A native of Vero Beach, Florida, Owen and his fraternal twin, Jarrod, grew up in the Florida sun playing sports like baseball and football before Jake turned to golf and Jarrod to tennis. They continued their respective sports together as students at Florida State University, until a water skiing accident resulted in reconstructive surgery for Jake. Off the golf team and struggling with depression, he borrowed a neighbor\'s guitar and passed the time teaching himself to play by listening to childhood favorites like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Vern Gosdin, and Keith Whitley. Chrissie Hynde Stockholm (2014) allmusic.com... Since the late \'70s, singer/guitarist/songwriter Chrissie Hynde has been the leader of one of rock\'s most widely beloved bands, the Pretenders. Born on September 7, 1951 in Akron, OH, Hynde was turned on to rock the same way zillions of others did in the \'60s -- via such British invasion bands as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, and the Kinks. After attending Kent State University in the early \'70s (where she witnessed first hand the tragic Kent State Killings of 1970) and forming one of her first rock bands (with future members of Devo), Hynde became enamored with such proto-punk bands as the Stooges and the Velvet Underground. Fed up with the U.S. music scene, Hynde bought a one way ticket to London, England, where she became a rock critic. But more importantly, she found what she was looking for musically -- Great Britain was in the middle of a musical revolution, "punk rock." Summer Number Seventeen (2014)

image

allmusic.com...

Ronnie Milsap closed out his golden decade by turning into something of an oldies crooner, reaching the pop charts for one last time in 1985 with "Lost in the Fifties Tonight," an unabashed slice of nostalgia that interpolated the Five Satins\' doo wop classic "In the Still of the Night." That tune was nearly 30 years old in 1985 and, some 30 years later, Milsap revives "Lost in the Fifties Tonight" for 2014\'s Summer Number Seventeen, a record that unabashedly celebrates the \'50s in the fashion of Ronnie\'s \'80s. Milsap bends the rules slightly, finding space for \'60s Motown (Jimmy Ruffin\'s "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted") and \'70s Philly soul (the Stylistics\' "You Make Me Feel Brand New"), but this is still super-smooth adult contemporary fueled by his gossamer electric piano and grounded by his still supple croon. Apart from "Georgia on My Mind," which is a bit funkier than expected, and the inclusion of the newly written title track (a swaying, slow-dance bit of mythologizing of sweet teenage summers), there\'s nothing surprising in either the song selection or presentation but if there were, that\'d go against the very spirit of this project. Summer Number Seventeen is supposed to comfort and soothe, to bring back rose-colored memories of any number of possible pasts, and in that regard it succeeds handsomely.

One of the most popular acts in the electro-industrial related "aggrotech" movement, Combichrist is solely Icon of Coil founder Andy LaPlegua when in the studio, augmented by a revolving cast of musicians for their intense live shows. LaPlegua launched the project in 2003 with the album The Joy of Gunz released by the German label Out of Line. Two years later Everybody Hates You became Combichrist\'s first release on the American label Metropolis. The "Get Your Body Beat" single was purposefully released on July 6, 2006 (6/6/6) and gave the band their first Billboard chart position with six weeks on the magazine\'s dance chart. The track landed on their 2007 album What the F**k Is Wrong with You People? a breakthrough effort which also featured the club hits "Electrohead" and "Deathbed." The year 2008 saw the audience increase thanks to a support slot on Mindless Self Indulgence\'s tour of the U.S., along with the release of Combichrist\'s Frost EP: Sent to Destroy. Daryl Hall & John Oates The Essential Daryl Hall & John Oates (2005) (Remastered) allmusic.com... RCA/Arista/Legacy\'s 2005 release The Essential Daryl Hall & John Oates is a repackaging of BMG Heritage\'s excellent 2004 compilation Ultimate Daryl Hall + John Oates. Spanning two discs and 37 tracks, the set contains all 18 songs from 2001\'s The Very Best of Daryl Hall & John Oates, which was a single-disc, 18-track collection that contained all of the duo\'s big hits from the \'70s and \'80s (three tracks were in alternate single mixes on that collection; they\'re presented in their original album mixes here), along with "She\'s Gone" (absent on The Very Best) and two other Atlantic tracks from the early \'70s, selections from their Arista recordings of the late \'80s and early \'90s, as well as cuts from 1997\'s Marigold Sky and 2003\'s excellent comeback single, "Do It for Love." While there are still plenty of great album tracks, particularly from the Atlantic years, that would have been welcome additions, that\'s something only the hardcore fans who already have all the albums will quibble about. For the less dedicated listener, all that matters is that there are no major hits missing on The Essential Daryl Hall & John Oates (there are a couple of low-charting singles from the late \'70s that have been left behind, but their absence isn\'t notable) and that the remastered sound is very good, making this an ideal compilation for fans looking for a thorough, career-spanning collection of hits. Chrissie Hynde - Fidelity! (2010) {FLAC} vtwin88cube

JP, Chrissie & The Fairground Boys Fidelity! (2010) allmusic.com... Through thick and thin, Chrissie Hynde never once stepped outside of the Pretenders, which makes her union with JP & the Fairground Boys significant. Teaming with twentysomething Welsh singer/songwrter JP Jones -- rumor has it the relationship was more than professional, a whisper supported by Hynde singing “I’ve found the perfect lover but he’s half my age” on the album opener -- and his band of shaggy Libertines disciples, Hynde loosens herself up considerably. Over years of touring, the Pretenders wound up as a precision-tuned machine, so it’s a welcome change to hear Hynde with a band lacking such finely honed chops. Still, it’s a mistake to think of JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys\' Fidelity! as a Hynde solo album in disguise. This is very much a collaboration, with nearly every song song co-written and sung as a duet between JP and Chrissie, the one exception being the Jones spotlight “Leave Me If You Must,” whose very existence suggests that the whole project is a way to showcase JP, not Chrissie. To that extent, Fidelity! is effective, suggesting that Jones has an appeal somewhere between Glen Hansard and Jeff Tweedy, an impeccably messily manicured roots troubadour who works hard to make everything look easy. He’s ingratiating, but his charm is strengthened by Hynde’s reaction to him; she’s clearly infatuated -- on a professional level, to be sure, but quite possibly more -- and her joy at playing with Jones and the Fairground Boys infects the entire record, lending it a ramshackle warmth that’s been missing from her music for a while now. The Essential Joshua Bell (2007)

allmusic.com...

Existing fans of violinist Joshua Bell are already well-acquainted with the broad scope of repertoire and performance abilities ranging deftly from the classical concerto repertoire to his well-known collaborations with Edgar Meyer. For those unfamiliar with Bell\'s recorded works, this two-disc set of The Essential Joshua Bell provides quite a comprehensive overview of his wide-ranging talents. Of course, it could also be argued that if one movement of a concerto is "essential," so too should be the rest of the movements. Some of the single-movement works on the album, such as the Paganini variations or the Sarasate Introduction and Tarantella, work well on compilation albums such as this because they don\'t leave the listener with an incomplete picture of what the composer had intended. With larger works such as the concertos of Goldmark, Mendelssohn, or Beethoven, hearing only single movements doesn\'t do full justice to either the composer nor to Bell\'s performances. This anthology also surprisingly lacks Bell\'s recording of the Tchaikovsky concerto, perhaps one of his most energetic and innovative performances of a standard repertoire concerto. So if you\'re really not sure if you like Bell\'s playing or his choice of repertoire, this is certainly an enjoyable introduction. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and invest in the complete albums from which this collection was made.

allmusic.com...

The Essential Daryl Hall & John Oates (2005)
(Remastered)

image

allmusic.com...
