Moby was one of the most controversial figures in techno music, alternately praised for bringing a face to the notoriously anonymous electronic genre and scorned by hordes of techno artists and fans for diluting and trivializing the form. In either case, Moby was one of the most important dance music figures of the early \'90s, helping bring the music to a mainstream audience both in England and in America. Moby fused rapid disco beats with heavy distorted guitars, punk rhythms, and detailed productions that drew equally from pop, dance, and movie soundtracks. Not only did his music differ from both the cool surface textures of ambient music and the hedonistic world of house music, but so did his lifestyle; Moby was famous for his devout radical Christian beliefs, as well as his environmental and vegan activism. "Go" became a British Top Ten hit in 1991, establishing him as one of the premier techno producers. By the time he came to the attention of American record critics with 1995\'s Everything Is Wrong, his following from the early \'90s had begun to erode, particularly in Britain. Nevertheless, he remained one of the most recognizable figures within techno; after he abandoned the music for guitar rock with 1996\'s Animal Rights, he returned to a heavy electronic base with 1997\'s I Like to Score and 1999\'s Play, the latter of which made him a genuine breakout pop star.

This double-disc set encompasses her entire career, and though the lion\'s share of the material may come from RCA (where she spent the longest part of her career), it includes recordings from every label she recorded for, including Bethlehem, Colpix, Philips, CTI, and Elektra. There are 31 tracks in all, and virtually every one is essential Simone. She was virtually limitless in her abilities to cover almost any genre in her way, and while there are other collections that address different parts of Simone\'s career more completely, this is the only one most fans and curiosity seekers will ever need.

If you\'re willing to count his work in such early regional bands as the Prime Movers and the Iguanas, Iggy Pop has been playing rock & roll for over 40 years as this compilation hits the stores -- meaning there are guys in big-league rock bands who\'ve spent years trying to be Iggy but weren\'t even alive when the guy first started plugging into the Real O Mind. That, dear readers, is influence, and while the man has had more than his share of creative ups and downs over those four decades, one spin of A Million in Prizes: The Anthology tells you why Iggy has always mattered, and still does -- he has never lost the ability to plug into the primal madness and furious belief that separates great rock & roll from ordinary stuff, and he can call up that near-demonic passion on a regular basis. While this isn\'t the first career-inclusive Iggy compilation, A Million in Prizes is comprised of two full-loaded CDs, which gives it a scale and scope that bests its closest competition, 1996\'s solid Nude & Rude: The Best of Iggy Pop, and it also gives full props to his work with the Stooges, featuring 11 songs from that band\'s various incarnations (though whose idea was it to only include one track from the epochal Fun House? For shame!). As for the solo stuff, this set follows the bizarre roller-coaster ride from the gloomy self-reappraisal of his albums with David Bowie through his desperate efforts to find his own solo voice in the 1980s to his reemergence in the new millennium as an artist who can merge mind and muscle with equal force. While not every album is represented on A Million in Prizes, this offers an accurate and compelling look at the Iggy time line, and the mastering is strong, clear, and loud (especially on the earlier material, which has long merited aural refurbishing). The liner essays from Danny Fields and Lenny Kaye are excellent, and Iggy sums himself pretty well when he tells Fields, "I get up in the morning, I look in the mirror, and I think, \'Hey, you\'re a pretty interesting guy.\'" That may well be rock\'s greatest understatement, and while A Million in Prizes is hardly the final and definitive statement on Iggy Pop\'s life and music, as an introduction and career overview it\'s damn near unbeatable -- at least until Iggy finally gets the box set treatment he so richly deserves.

A native of Lake Placid, New York, Del Rey released the single "Kill Kill" under her given name, Lizzy Grant, in 2009 before remaking herself into the pop femme fatale character Lana Del Rey. Linkin Park The Hunting Party (2014) allmusic.com... Sacramento hard rockers Tesla were always outliers in the glam and pop metal scene of the late \'80s. They had been experimenting with acoustic songs since their first album, 1986\'s Mechanical Resonance, and offered up a more honest and simply presented version of the era\'s blazing guitar anthems than their lipsticked, spandexed contemporaries. Despite a six-year break in the late \'90s, they\'ve also managed to stick around, releasing decent studio and live albums throughout the 2000s. Following 2011\'s Twisted Wires & the Acoustic Sessions album, they\'ve pulled their amps out of storage and returned with a solid set of straight-ahead rockers and tasteful acoustic numbers on 2014\'s Simplicity. Just a year prior, they released the thrashing single "Taste My Pain," which strove to reclaim their heavier tendencies, overcompensating just a bit. But throughout Simplicity, Tesla focus on simple, well-executed songs and unencumbered, stripped-down production, as emphasized by standouts like "So Divine...," "Other Than Me," and the ballad "Life Is a River." Their mix of hard rock, blues, and occasional heartland flourishes on this collection should please fans, showing that their heads are still in the right place.

Willie Nelson has been a prolific singer and recording artist since the 1970s, but the songwriter who penned hits for Ray Price, Patsy Cline, Billy Walker, and Johnny Cash, among others, hasn\'t issued an album of predominantly original material since 1996. Band of Brothers ends the drought. Its 14 selections include nine new songs by Nelson (with producer Buddy Cannon) and a handful of fine covers. Opener "Bring It On" is a honky tonk waltz that offers wisdom by someone who has lived through plenty as he looks eternity squarely in the eye. He is in excellent voice as Mickey Raphael\'s harmonica moans to underscore his lyric. Nelson delivers his first guitar solo on Trigger (his nylon-stringed instrument). His playing, with its unique phrasing, has always been underrated and here it evokes the blues. His love songs have always been highlights in his catalog. "I Thought I Left You" is in 4/4, with a slow processional pace adorned with slippery steel and piano. The lost romance portrayed in the waltz "Send Me a Picture" is another clear standout; a sighing pedal steel and Raphael\'s mid-register wail echo every sung line. Nelson can still write first-rate, irreverent barroom tunes as well. "Wives and Girlfriends" is a swaggering honky tonker, with wiseass lines and a punchy groove. The title track is a midtempo full-band anthem that celebrates the itinerant musician\'s life. (It pairs thematically with a righteous cover of Bill Anderson\'s "The Songwriters.") The choogling Western swing he employs in "Used to Her" updates not only Bob Wills, but Ray Benson. "The Wall" is a killer confessional, though in its rear-view mirror reflections, fueled by a strolling Rhodes piano, Travis-style guitars, and a two-step bassline, it\'s also a road song. Nelson covers two tunes by Billy Joe Shaver. "Hard to Be an Outlaw" is a wry, midtempo minor-key spaghetti Western-esque blues with a great guitar break from Willie, while "The Git Go," another bluesy number, is a slow rocking duet with Jamey Johnson. "Crazy Like Me," by Shawn Camp and Billy Burnette, is an update of trucker country rockabilly that sets up the closer, the original "I\'ve Got a Lot of Traveling to Do." It\'s been 40 years since Nelson gave us "On the Road Again." This is a companion in a sense, less celebratory, more weathered and ornery, but no less restless. Cannon\'s production here recalls the memory of Nelson\'s early to mid-\'70s records without being slavishly devoted to sounding retro. Phase-shifted and wide-open electric guitars, clean, whining pedal steel, warm and natural shuffling drums, acoustic pianos, organ, and electric basses paint these songs beautifully. On Band of Brothers, Nelson reminds us that no matter the iconic place he occupies in American popular music as a vocal stylist, he is a classic country singer and songwriter first.

As his fans know by now, Hank Williams III made it clear he didn\'t want to play nice with Curb Records after they signed the renegade country artist in 1996 and quickly discovered he was also into punk and metal and wanted to add those sounds to his recorded repertoire. Hank\'s contract ran out in 2010, and Ramblin\' Man is the third album Curb has released since Hank III moved on. With only eight songs and a total running time of 27 minutes, it\'s more like an EP than a full-length, and most of this material will sound pretty familiar to Hank III completists. "Okie from Muskogee" and the title cut both come from sessions with the Melvins that appeared on their 2000 album The Crybaby, "Fearless Boogie" comes from the 2002 ZZ Top tribute Sharp Dressed Men, "I\'m the Only Hell (My Mamma Ever Raised)" was previously released on the 2004 Johnny Paycheck tribute disc Touch My Heart, and "Marijuana Blues" popped up on the 2010 Peter La Farge tribute Rare Breed. Elsewhere, "On My Own" is a longer take of the same tune that appeared on Hank III\'s Risin\' Outlaw in 1999, and "Hang On" was first released on the soundtrack to the 2001 Sylvester Stallone vehicle Driven. That leaves the previously bootleg-only Assjack track "Runnin\' and Gunnin\'" as the only "new" item to appear on Ramblin\' Man. While the mix of country and raw rock material on this collection certainly gives it more of the flavor of Hank III\'s genre-bending style, Ramblin\' Man is best recommended for casual Hank III fans who haven\'t gotten caught up with many of the tracks he\'s cut for tribute albums and other collections; otherwise, this set feels short and not so sweet, despite the strength of a few genuinely strong tracks.

Although the first solo single from soul-inspired, London-born artist Sam Smith was issued in early 2013, it was his soaring vocal contribution to Disclosure\'s October 2012 U.K. garage track "Latch" that brought him to most people\'s attention. For most of his teens, Smith balanced study with music, soaking in the raw and passionate approach to performance exemplified by his favorite artists at that time such as Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan. "Latch" hit the upper reaches of the U.K. singles chart when Smith was 21, and many were surprised when his debut solo track took a more tempered path. The production on February 2013\'s "Lay Me Down" -- also courtesy of the ordinarily dancefloor-focused duo Disclosure -- recalled the stripped-back material that had proved successful for Adele in the preceding years. Next, Shahid Khan -- aka Naughty Boy -- decided to follow his Emeli Sandé-fronted U.K. Top Ten hit "Wonder" with the infectious, Bollywood sample-driven "La La La." Featuring Smith\'s powerful lead vocal, it became an instant May 2013 U.K. number one single following his spring tour in support of Sandé. That October he issued the Nirvana EP, which included an acoustic reading of "Latch," and by the end of February 2014 he was at the top of the U.K. singles chart once again with "Money on My Mind," an infectious track that inventively married his relaxed vocal with a frenetic beat. Smith\'s debut full-length, In the Lonely Hour, was released that May in the U.K. It arrived in the U.S. the following month. A singular talent who passed almost unnoticed during his brief lifetime, Nick Drake produced several albums of chilling, somber beauty. With hindsight, these have come to be recognized as peak achievements of both the British folk-rock scene and the entire rock singer/songwriter genre. Sometimes compared to Van Morrison, Drake in fact resembled Donovan much more in his breathy vocals, strong melodies, and the acoustic-based orchestral sweep of his arrangements. His was a much darker vision than Donovan\'s, however, with disturbing themes of melancholy, failed romance, mortality, and depression lurking just beneath, or even well above, the surface. British singer/songwriter David Gray had already released three overlooked albums by the time White Ladder (and its international breakthrough hit, "Babylon") brought his mix of acoustic instruments and electronic samples to the mainstream. Born in Manchester in 1968, Gray relocated to Wales at the age of nine before returning home to attend the University of Liverpool. While in school, he dabbled in several punk bands and began exploring new styles of writing, eventually uncovering his own poetic penmanship. Following a move to London, Gray signed to Hut Records in the United Kingdom and Caroline Records in the United States, releasing the debut single, "Birds Without Wings," in 1992. The next year saw the release of his first full-length record, A Century Ends, and Gray\'s trademark style of fiery vocals countered with folksy, acoustic songcraft began to find an audience, particularly in Ireland. However, despite frequent solo tours (as well as an opening slot for Shawn Colvin), Gray\'s edgy sophomore effort, Flesh, was met with an underwhelming response in 1994, and he was dropped from his label as a result.

Multi-talented and flamboyant, Cee Lo Green initially made a name for himself and his trademark crooning as part of pioneering Dirty South rappers Goodie Mob before he broke away in the early 2000s for a colorful solo route. Along with fellow Atlanta rappers OutKast, Goodie Mob laid out the blueprint for the Dirty South style during the mid-\'90s, making serious waves with their debut album, Soul Food (1995). Cee Lo was an important member of the group, often singing the hooks to many of Goodie Mob\'s best songs (e.g., "Cell Therapy," "Soul Food," "Black Ice"). But the group didn\'t last too long, and after a few releases over a five-year span, Cee Lo split with Goodie Mob for a promising solo deal with Arista.
